Purpose

The Sustainability through your own lens school photography competition, delivered by ResourceSmart Schools, celebrates student creativity through imagery and a written reflection.

Overview

Victorian students are invited to enter the ResourceSmart Schools Sustainability Through Your Own Lens photography competition.

This year, we're celebrating Biodiversity Month with the theme Backyard Biodiversity: Discover your local icons. Students are encouraged to explore their local environment and capture original photographs that showcase the unique plants, animals, habitats and ecosystems found in their region.

Students are invited to submit an original photograph alongside a short-written reflection responding to the question:

What species, habitat or place in nature do you think deserves greater recognition and protection and why?

All finalists will have their photos:

  • promoted across ResourceSmart Schools and DEECA social media channels and websites
  • showcased at the 2027 ResourceSmart Schools Awards as part of a special exhibition.

Winners will also:

  • receive $200 for their school to support a sustainability project or initiative
  • be invited to attend the 2027 ResourceSmart Schools Awards
  • be presented with a professionally printed and framed copy of their photograph.

Eligibility

The competition is open to Victorian schools that are active ResourceSmart Schools or become active before entering - don't worry is free and easy. If you are unsure on how to become active, just email resourcesmartawards@deeca.vic.gov.au.
