Overview

Objectives of the Round 2 grant opportunity are to:

  • deliver large scale management and reduction of the threat of marine debris to species such as coral, turtles, dugongs and seabirds
  • mitigate negative impacts of marine debris on tourism, recreation and fishing (commercial and recreational) within the Reef
  • support activities that reduce water pollution from urban sources within Reef catchments
  • improve water quality through the removal of marine debris from Reef coastlines and urban waterways
  • develop and deliver targeted education and awareness raising activities to reduce and prevent litter, including plastics, from entering Reef waterways
  • encourage greater community stewardship and involvement, including with First Nations peoples, promoting a shared sense of responsibility for Reef pollutants
  • inform and contribute to wider plastic management and mitigation strategic policy for state and/or national scale implementation
  • identify and support local or regional opportunities in circular or renewable material economies and/or activities.

For Round 2 of the program, the Australian Government has committed $8 million (GST exclusive) over 4 years from 2026-27 to 2029-30 for the program, comprised of $4 million (GST exclusive) from the original Marine Debris Program and an additional $4 million (GST exclusive) from the Reefwise Urban Program. For this grant opportunity (Round 2), one grant will be awarded, totalling $8 million (GST exclusive) over 4 years from 2026-27 to 2029-30.
