Purpose

The prestigious Griffin Award recognises an outstanding play or performance text that displays an authentic, inventive and contemporary Australian voice

Overview

In 2026, thanks to the generosity of Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund, the winning playwright will receivea full commission ($17,700) and dramaturgical support from Griffin Theatre Company to develop their play in-house.

Limitations

To be eligible for the Griffin Award, plays must:

  • Be at least 60 minutes in length.
  • Be unproduced and unpublished.
  • Be unencumbered by agreements for future production or publication.
  • Not have been previously submitted for the Griffin Award or have been part of any of our other artistic programs.
  • Be written by a playwright who is a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.

Entry terms and conditions:

  1. Playwrights may submit only one (1) play for consideration. 
  2. The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. 
  3. The work must be submitted electronically via entry form on the Griffin website. 
  4. Griffin shall have worldwide first right of refusal to produce the winning play for a period of 12 months following announcement of the winner. 
  5. Plays or performance texts submitted may be original ideas or adaptations from other forms providing that permission to adapt the material has been obtained from the copyright holder.
    The rights for all material in the work must be secured by the writer prior to entry. This includes any songs, poems or quotes.  
  6. Due to the high volume of submissions, Griffin is not able to supply feedback on submitted plays.
