Purpose
AFWI's National Open Call for Research invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) for projects that deliver transformative, industry-focused research to support Australia's forestry and forest products industries.
Overview
Through the National Open Call (NOC), AFWI seeks Expressions of Interest for co-investment in industry-led or investigator-led research partnerships that address significant national challenges and opportunities across the forest and wood products value chain. Proposals should demonstrate strong collaboration with industry partners, align with AFWI's four Strategic Pillars - Healthier Forests, Maximising Fibre Use and Value, Climate Solutions and Housing Innovation - and show a credible pathway to industry adoption and impact.
Proposals need to demonstrate alignment to AFWI's four strategic pillars:
- Healthier Forests: Building a resilient, productive and climate-adapted forest estate.
- Maximising Fibre: Lifting fibre recovery, processing efficiency and value creation.
- Climate Solutions: Positioning Australia as a leader in forest-based climate and natural capital systems.
- Housing Innovation: Accelerating adoption of engineered timber and MMC to support national housing supply.
Funding: Indicative grant size from $50,000 up to $2.5 million, although funding requests outside this range may be considered.
Limitations
Eligible applicants include but are not limited to:
- Research Organisations including universitiesand the CSIRO;
- Forestry and forest products industry stakeholders including industry associations and peak bodies;
- Indigenous organisations;
- Not for profits;
- Local and state governments;
- Consortia or partnerships (lead organisation must be based in Australia);
- Private or public companies (must be based in Australia).
