Purpose
The Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program provides a subsidy to eligible primary and secondary students and home educators in Queensland undertaking excursions along the length of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), from Bundaberg to Cooktown.
Overview
The program supports opportunities for students to undertake place-based learning activities in the GBR and helps tourism operators create and improve educational products and experiences to attract new visitors to the region.
The Program provides up to $150 per eligible student paid directly to schools and registered home educators to go towards the cost of excursions, which include a reef experience.
To be eligible for the subsidy the excursion itinerary must include at least one curriculum-related reef activity, facilitated by a commercial reef tourism operator registered with the program, operating within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage boundaries.
Eligibility
The Program is available upon application to all Queensland primary and secondary schools, including schools of distance education and registered homeschools, where students are participating in an eligible curriculum-related experience as part of their excursion. Schools must apply on behalf of their enrolled students participating in the excursion. Subsidy payments will not be provided to an individual student or their family, except by arrangement with registered homeschools and can only be passed on as savings on the cost of the excursion.
